A moving portrait of ordinary people in heartbreaking circumstances, exploring the ache of loss and the search for solace.

Intensely moving novel that details the life of a couple, Naomi and Rick, trying to rebuild their lives after the sudden tragic death of their only child, Dahlia, in a car accident.

Naomi is a teacher of a private school, where attended by Dahlia. Rick is a podiatrist with a successful New York City practice. They are living an ordinary life, and nothing prepares them for the accident that will take Dahlia's life.

In the aftermath of the accident, Rick and Naomi are forced to examine their behaviour and how deeply it has affected not only their lives, but the lives of those around them.

They pull away from each other, the grief, guilt and overwhelming sorrow too hard to bear. Rick begins an affair with the office manager at his podiatry practice while Naomi finds solace in the arms of the doctor that delivered the news of her daughter’s death.

The distance between Rick and Naomi widens until another twist of fate (Naomi's mother struggling with her increasing bouts of memory loss) awaken them to the value of their own lives and to the true meaning of family.

  1. I'd really like to read this.
Losing a child must be the worst thing that can happen to anyone. I think I'd weep over this book, but it has a positive ending, apparently. Sounds good.
