I am David

Rating:★★★
Category:Books
Genre: Literature & Fiction
Author:Anne Holm

A fiction book written by Anne Holm in 1963.

A story of a 12-year old young boy who, with the help of a prison guard, escapes from a concentration camp in Eastern Europe, and of his journey to Denmark in hopes of finding freedom, while facing danger and encountering various people along the way.

When choosing a god to worship, David chooses the God of "Green Pastures and Still Waters" whom he believe, is the only being, living or dead, who knows of his existence outside the camp.

During David's journey, he saves the life of a beautiful little girl named Maria. When she awakens, she smiles at David. and that is the time when David learns the true meaning of happiness and how to smile.

David has also taught her ~~
"You must listen to the people you think are good - your father and mother and the people who teach you things in school. Then you must think over what they say and decide how much of it you feel is right. But you must be careful, because what is right is not always what you want, and if you make a mistake, you regret it afterwards."

"You must always hate what was evil, or else you grew just like them"

Very touching in the last chapter, where David "gives up his last entitled wish' to request God of "Green Pastures and Still Waters" to ensure the dog's safety. However, at end it is the dog which scarifies its life to protect David.

  2. I've heard about it - I may even have read it as a child, or read part of it. I was honestly totally FED UP with WWII stories in my childhood (I was born in '54).
It sounds rather sentimental to me - maybe only because most of those stories were.

  3. Though I'm not borned during that time, but everytime when I read stories relating to WW2, feel so sad and get so emotional. That's why I always pray for PEACE.

  4. I feel sad too, but the war that has impressed me most personally is the Vietnam war. I feel sad about the recent ones, and also about WWI - all meaningless killings.
I know the Holocaust was a gruesome tragedy. It's just that Europeans of my generations were given the impression that Jews were the ONLY ones who ever suffered in this world. You don't have to be a very big child to realize that they aren't, and then it gets rather tiresome that you hear about them all the time.
